Arts Festival Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2009 Inishbofin Community Arts Festival. This is the eleventh Arts Festival to be held on Inishbofin, with previous festivals in 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2000, 1998, 1993 and the inaugural festival in 1977. The programme includes a wide and varied list of events. With music, the visual arts, workshops, arts and crafts and much more to offer. We hope to reach all ages and interests with this year’s programme. The festival organisers would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our sponsors. It is their generosity that provides the Inishbofin Development Company with the platform to present you with a full and varied festival. 9pm: Official Opening by Local Clare Island Man Jackie O Grady, Author of Green Road to Lighthouse
Opening music by Peadar King & Guests Peadar King, an Inishbofin native, will be playing original material from his recently released album – the Nature of Flaws. Peadar will be joined by three fellow musicians on piano, Double Bass and drums.

12-1pm Inishbofin National School Drama Play – Bofin Tales. Free Entry Bofin Tales is a number of sketches about Island life based on the kids own stories & experiences. The children are being tutored by Clifden local – Megan Vine & Avi Ratnayake. Megan is in her first year studying Applied Drama at London Goldsmiths University & she is being ably helped by Avi, a freelance photographer also based in London.
11-3pm Coastline Walk with Dave McGrath €10 Dave McGrath is a lecturer in the Dept of Life Sciences at GMIT in Galway. He has 25 years experience of shoreline eco systems, outdoor education & environmental courses. Dave will guide you on a wonderful Island shoreline journey exploring its inhabitants & amazing shoreline life. . *Appropriate footwear required*
1-2pm 4-8 years, 2-3pm 9-16 years Hip Hop Dance Weekend €5 20 year old Kiera Maloney was the all Ireland Hip Hop Champion at 16 years old. Her dance classes are Uncomplicated & easy to follow routines, promoting Fun & Spontaneity increasing Confidence & Self Esteem. Most Importantly her Dancing is FUN FUN FUN.
1-3pm Knitting Workshop by Ann O Maille €5 See Sunday timetable for description.
1-4pm Falconry Display by Animal Magic €10 Event takes place at Sports field Animal Magic is husband & wife team, Rosie & John Campbell. The aim is to share with you the pleasure & excitement of close encounters with a variety of hawks & Falcons. The moment when you’re Hawk first lands on your gloved fist stays with you forever. The Campbell’s have been handling birds for over 20 years & the fascination never wanes.
5:30pm: - Poetry Reading supplied by Pat Mcmahon Free Entry - Sponsors Galway County Council 7.30-9pm “Cry of the dreamer” Musical Play by Sean Tyrell €10, €5 (under 16s) Sean tyrells love of music is very much to the fore as this musical story of Famine, Revolution, Feminism & Penal Servitude is cleverly tied together with Jigs, Reels, a March and a few slow airs, using an array of instruments, Sean weaves effortlessly between Narrative, Instrumental & Song. 10.30pm Imelda May with Small Cars (support) €25 Sunday 10th May 2009
10-12pm Teddy Bears Picnic for the Youngsters €5 Bouncy Castle, music, Fun, Sweets & Drinks 1-4.30pm: Archaeological Walk by Michael Gibbons – Monastic Retreat & Island Prison, A Journey in Time € 10 Michael Gibbons is a graduate of UCG & Former director of Sites & Monuments OPW. He is the founder of the Clifden Hill walking Club, which is still going strong today. Michael recently lectured Archaeology at Smithsonian’s, Harvard, Sydney & Melbourne Universities. Most importantly her Dancing is FUN FUN FUN. 2-4 pm Knitting Weekend by Ann & Niamh O Maille Niamh recently launched Galway school of Knitting based at the family shop, O Mailles Original house of style, 16 High street, Galway. Knitting is experiencing a great revival at this moment & they are eager to share the joy of knitting & are committed to passing on their experience of this ancient craft with pupils from beginners to intermediate. Knitting yarns, needles & patterns are provided. Thanks to Frieda Ryan for donating the Knitting wool.
11pm John Spillane €15 John Spillane, in his own words, is a Musician, Songwriter, Performer, Recording Artist, Storyteller, and Poet. His Music transports the listener; his live performances captivate the audience. In a world filled with Strife & Upheaval, Time out with John Spillane is enough to ease the load on anyone lucky enough to bask in his light. The man & his music are pure magic. Voted Top Solo Performer in concert by the Irish Music Association 2008. Art Exhibition by Aisling Coughlin and Padraic Rainey Aisling is a primary school teacher, who is currently pursuing a Diploma in Arts at the National College of Art & Design. Aisling has been visiting Inishbofin for 15 years & in the last few years has started painting scenes of Bofin & is delighted to to be exhibiting her work.
Padraic is a full time Painter & Sculptor with a studio in Moycullen, Co Galway & is certainly no stranger to Inishbofin having exhibited at previous Arts Festivals & we look forward to showing his work again.
